چکیده

Among the various categories of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) service, ABR (Available Bit Rate) and UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) have been introduced to support data traffic (such as TCP). GFR (Guarantee Frame Rate) is the current proposed ATM service to provide better performance for data traffic over ATM. The aim of this paper is two-folded. Firstly, we characterise the major research issues in GFR and draw upon the published works to illustrate some of the critical issues about the specification and the possible alternatives of its implementation. Secondly, we undertake a performance evaluation of ATM-GFR’s buffer management algorithms (two-static-threshold scheme and per-VC accounting) and scheduling (FIFO (First In First Out) and WFQ (Weighted Fair Queue)). The simulation results have shown that two-static-threshold-buffermanagement and per-VC-buffer management give the best performance comparing with plain UBR, UBREPD and per-VC scheduling. We also found that the two-threshold buffer management scheme is significant to handle CLP0+1 traffic. This scheme can distinguish between the tagged (low priority) and untagged (high priority) packets of the traffic and protect the bandwidth from flushing by tagged packets. The per-VC scheduling without the sensitivity of tagged/untagged frames can lead to the poor performance for untagged (high priority) packets.

A Per-VC Global FIFO Scheduling Algorithm for Implementing the New ATM GFR Service

The performance of various GFR (Guaranteed Frame Rate) implementations has been recently studied due to the interest to provide bandwidth guarantees with a simpler implementation than ABR in ATM networks. In this paper we describe and evaluate a scheduling algorithm to provide the GFR service guarantees. The evaluation is performed by simulation using TCP connections. The proposed scheduling is...

Buffer management and scheduling schemes for TCP/IP over ATM-GFR

Today ATM technology is facing challenges from Integrated Service IP, IP switching, Gigabit IP router and Gigabit Ethernet. Although ATM is approved by ITU-T as the standard technology in B-ISDN, its survivability is still in question. Since ATMUBR (Unspeci ed Bit Rate) provides no service guarantee and ATM-ABR (Available Bit Rate) is still unattainable for most users, many existing users have ...

Providing Rate Guarantees to TCP over the ATM GFR Service

The ATM Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) service is intended for best e ort tra c that can bene t from minimum throughput guarantees. Edge devices connecting LANs to an ATM network can use GFR to transport multiple TCP/IP connections over a single GFR VC. These devices would typically multiplex VCs into a single FIFO queue. It has been shown that in general, FIFO queuing is not su cient to provide r...
